At Birhaan, we have set out to sustain and create jobs for traditional weavers and artisans. We are committed to preserving the design techniques of our ancestors that create our beautiful traditional wear. Our dress making process includes hand spinning natural cotton to create the fabric of our gowns, then hand weaving unique patterns onto each Zuria.

Our Story:

We came up with the idea for Birhaan when trying to figure out what to wear to a wedding. Frustrated by the lack of options to find a dress with the right fit & style, we felt there had to be an alternative. Our appreciation for fashion led us to re-imagine the shopping process. The concept was clear: bridge the gap between home and the diaspora market. 

The inspiration behind Birhaan (and the source of the name) comes from the stylish, witty and joyful Birhaan Zeselasie. The matriarch of her multi-generational family, she taught us about traditional materials, designs, and styles. More importantly, she modeled a way of living that lived up to her name meaning light. To know her is to love her…. This venture is in many ways an ode to her.
